Bolivia es el hogar de 36 grupos indígenas los cuales, a pesar de ser mayoría poblacional, han sufrido marginalización y discriminación desde la época colonial. Evo Morales, presidente del país, el primer mandatario indígena, es líder del Movimiento al Socialismo, cuyo objetivo fundamental ha sido la integración de las comunidades indígenas en la vida nacional. La gente se reúne en las ruinas sagradas de la antigua ciudad estado de Tiahuanaco, al lado del lago Titicaca, para celebrar una ceremonia tradicional sobre el día inaugural de Morales.
