Ben Vandandaigue, cabo de las Fuerzas Canadienses,toca la batería en la Forward Operating Base Sperwan Ghar, con vistas al distrito de Panjwai, en la provincia de Kandahar, Afganistán. Vandandaigue tocaba su música en un rincón de la base cuando ésta no se utilizaba para reparar vehículos blindados, durante la última semana de patrulla de su unidad. Las operaciones de combate canadienses llegaron a su final en julio con la retirada de las tropas de la región meridional de Afganistán. La base fue entregada a los estadounidenses.

A 1998 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in Spanish, Goldman’s first job was as a staff photographer at the weekly North County Independent newspaper, in Rhode Island. In 2001, he joined the staff of the Boston Herald as a photo technician, before becoming a staff photographer there in 2002. In 2007, Goldman returned to his native New York City to join the AP as an editor on the national photo desk, before leaving in 2008 to pursue opportunities as a freelance photographer.
